Fourmile (or Four Mile) Canyon Creek has a tributary watershed area of just over ten square miles and runs nearly 11 miles before joining Boulder Creek. It is part of the Boulder Greenways scheme and is used in flood control research and programs. The hiking trail begins at a steep drainage point where the terrain is not well established. This section is small, but it is more challenging to traverse, especially in winter. At the bottom of the drainage, the track is clearer and more solid. The second half of the trail is less marked. If you’re having trouble navigating the path, just stick along the creek, and you’re going to be alright. The wildlife is diverse and consists of different foxes and deer species.

It’s Near the Bald Mountain Scenic Area

It’s not easy to find a hike that pleases everybody in the family. It can’t be too rough, or the little ones burn out fast. It can’t be too quick, or the older kids will get bored. It’s got to have a stellar view and a range of animals to keep people interested. It also doesn’t hurt to be close to home and easy to find. Bald Mountain meets all the requirements. While it is more of a hill than a mountain, it certainly has its perks: breathtaking views of the Boulder range and the Indian Hills, an abundance of flora and fauna, and many benches and picnic tables. The summit clocks at a whopping 7,160 feet but is easily accessible to all ages and experience levels.

Betasso Preserve Trailhead

The Betasso Preserve Trailhead has a lovely picnic area and ample parking space. Unfortunately, drinking water is completely unavailable, so always bring a water bottle with you. The trail is primarily made up of single-track paths and offers breathtaking views of the scenery. The area is closed for mountain bikers on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so that’s the best time for your family outing. If you want to hike on other days of the week, pay attention to the bike traffic.
