Is Mead a Good Place to Live?

The small rural town is situated about 30 miles south of Boulder in Weld County. It was established by the eponymous family in the early 1900s when the railroad came to the area. Believe it or not, the action-packed blockbuster Die Hard was filmed here. The bulk of the filming took place at Highlandlake Church, a local historic landmark.

Historic Highlandlake Church

Historic Highlandlake, Inc. was first organized in 1917 with the sole mission of protecting and preserving the building of the Highlandlake Congregational Church. In 1917, the former synagogue was closed as the congregation could no longer afford to pay a priest. The building was already so valuable to the community that the occupants couldn’t bear the thought of its demolition. They negotiated a deal with the Congregational Association of Denver that said the people would be allowed to keep their cherished building. The condition was that a board of trustees be formed to supervise the use and care of the building and that the church is open to the public at least once a year. Today, the Highlandlake Church is listed on the Historic Places National Register, along with the Pioneer Cemetery.

St. Vrain State Park

Formerly known as Barbour Ponds, St. Vrain State Park is a municipal park in Colorado. It is a popular spot for birdwatching, housing the Blue Heron’s largest rookery in the states. It’s home to many other species of birds as well as migrant waterfowl, songbirds, and the endangered bald eagle.
