It Has a Rich History

The town was discovered in the mid-nineteenth century by a party of prospectors who pursued an ancient path up the Four Mile Creek. Right on the side of Horsfall Hill, they established one of the first mining districts in the region. The nearby stream was said to have yielded $100,000 in gold in the first year. In 1872 a rich form of tellurium (a mixture of gold and telluride minerals) was discovered in the area, and miners from all around the country flocked to the hills in pursuit of riches. The town was then moved to a much more hospitable location, between the gulches of Gold Run and Lick Skillet. Soon, the Golden Hill School, the oldest school in Colorado, opened, along with a post office, a hotel, and a number of boarding houses.

Brainard Lake Recreation Area

The Brainard Lake Recreation Area is a beautiful mountain retreat, just a short drive away from the neighborhood. The area offers some of the best hikes near Denver. Located in the Roosevelt National Forest, the trail leads to the Indian Peaks Wilderness, a popular destination for hikers, campers, and fishermen. There are almost 50 campsites open at Pawnee Campground from early summer to fall. The famous park offers spectacular views of the bay and ample space for tents, RVs, and trailers.

Switzerland Trail is a 20-mile high-traffic point-to-point trail suited for all ability levels. The encompassing scenery is characterized by diverse wildflowers scattered around the path. If you’re moving with pets, you can take your four-legged companion with you but must keep them on a leash.
